LESSON 18 DIALOGUE
– The Thespian –
Learn English – Lesson 18 – The Thespian
Karen: I used to walk the boards, you know.
Polly: You were in the theatre?
Karen: Yes I was. That’s where I met David. He used to design the sets.
Polly: Did you used to perform in big shows?
Karen: Yes, I used to perform in a lot of musicals. I performed in Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom of the opera.
Polly: Wow, that must have been very exciting. I didn’t use to like the theatre. It has grown on me over the years. Do you miss it?
Karen: I used to miss it a lot. I don’t think about it very much now. Occasionally I get the urge but not very often.
Polly: I think I’d like to try my hand at a bit of acting. Let’s join a drama group!
Karen: I don’t know about that…
Polly: Come on! Let’s give it a go. Don’t take it too seriously! It is just a bit of fun.
Karen: Hmm. Let me think about it…
Polly: Let’s look for some drama groups. We can see if there is one better suited to your experience.
Karen: Okay, but let’s not get too excited. I haven’t decided for sure yet.
Polly: Of course but it will do no harm to look! Besides, you may be inspired!
Karen: Fine, we’ll take a look on the internet but I’m not promising anything. Don’t build up your hopes!
Polly: I’ll grab the local newspaper too.

GRAMMAR PRACTICE – IMPERATIVE FORMS
We use the imperative form to give orders. Constructing a phrase using the imperative is not difficult. It is simply the infinitive without to.
Examples:
Come here!
Be quiet
To have is often used to express wishes imperatively:
Examples:
Have a good day!
Have fun!
To form the negative imperative, all you have to do is add the particle don’t before the imperative:
Negative imperative = Don’t + infinitive without to
Examples:
Don’t come here!
Please don’t go!
LET’S
Let’s is the imperative form used to express something to be done in a group:
Imperative of us = let’s + infinitive without to
Examples:
Let’s dance!
Let’s sing a song!
The negative form, let’s not, is used to express clear denial of an action or suggestion:
Negative imperative of us = Let’s not + infinitive without to
Examples:
I’m tired. Let’s not dance.
People are sleeping. Let’s not play music
