LESSON 38 DIALOGUE

– The New York Daydream –

Learn English – Lesson 38 – The New York Daydream

Laura has been dreaming about going to New York for a very long time. She loves that city and she is saving up money to buy herself a ticket as soon as possible. There are many different parts of the city that Laura wishes to visit and she has decided to make the ultimate list of the things she is really eager to do.

Laura: I cannot wait to see those beautiful buildings everywhere, aligned with those typical fire escapes. And the incredible Statue of Liberty and those yellows cabs driving around everywhere! I want to breathe the air of New York and go to Central Park, and Brooklyn in the south and Manhattan in the north. I really hope these dreams come true!

Laura dreams of walking down the streets and avenues of New York and to go window-shopping in all of the amazing and exclusive shops that are scattered across the city. She wants to go sightseeing, visit the Empire State Building, and feel the pulse of Wall Street.

Laura: One of my dearest wishes is to dance in those flashing lights at Times Square and eat those cronuts that I’ve heard so much about. I adore the idea of combining a croissant with a doughnut. That is genius! There are so many different gourmet restaurants in New York as well, and I am dying to try a New York pizza. I also wish to visit Chinatown and Little Italy and see the clashes of cultures in those areas. This will be such an exciting trip! Maybe I will be able to visit the suburbs as well, but I have to save more money so I can enjoy doing everything on this wish-list!

Facts: There are 62 cities in New York. The largest city in the state is New York City, which comprises five boroughs: Bronx, New York (Manhattan), Queens, Kings (Brooklyn), and Richmond (Staten Island).

The Demostrative

It is known in English as demonstrative to those determinants and pronouns that indicate the distance at which an object is located. In English, on the other hand, there are only two degrees: proximity and distance:

SINGULAR    PLURAL

 THIS              THESE  =  PROXIMITY

SINGULAR    PLURAL

THAT              THOSE  =  DISTANCE

Examples:

This place is fun./This is a fun place.

That man is your father./That is your father.

These people are kind./These are kind people.

Those pears are big./Those are big pears.

As you can see, in English there are only two degrees. That can also refer to something that has just happened or that has just been mentioned:

Did he fail his exam? That’s not fair!

Remember – Interrogative form of the Present Simple

The interrogative form of the simple present is formed in the following way:

Auxiliary       +    Suject           + Infinitivo         +         ?

(Do/Does)                                    without to

Example:

To make

Do I make?

Do you make?

Does he make?

Does she make?

Does it make?
