Everywhere you look there are gymnasiums or advertisement posters offering deals for monthly memberships. For some, attending a gym is a way of life, for others it is a temporary solution to getting rid of that excess flab accumulated during the festive season. A diet and a detox can as good as any exercise for some, certainly for those with little time, but for others, an exercise regime is more effective than any dietary programme. A combination of people becoming more health conscious and the media enforcing the idea of the body beautiful image, more and more are attending the gym.
The first gymnasiums in history can be dated over 3000 years ago in ancient Persia, they were known as Zurkhaneh, as areas that encouraged physical fitness. The Greek word gymnasium means « school for naked exercise » and was used to designate a locality for the education of young men, including physical education which was customarily performed naked, as well as bathing, and studies. For the Greeks, physical education was considered as important as cognitive learning.
Most people know how important exercise is to help burn calories, reduce the risk of obesity and strengthen the heart. Working out at home and eating healthy food is less expensive than paying a monthly fee at the gym. So why do so many believe the gym to be the best option?
One reason a person may decide to attend the gym is motivation. How many people have bought some dumbbells, used them once, then stored them away in the closet? A gym is not only a good place to meet people and immerse yourself in an energetic environment but also less tedious than working out at home alone. Exercising with a workout buddy is believed to be the best way to stay motivated and many gyms have group exercise classes. A healthy sense of competition can also be beneficial, as some may compare their progress with others engaged in the same physical activities. At the gym you are also devoid of distractions such as phone calls, television, children and house calls. For those who require an additional push, many gyms have personal trainers to guide you through, with emphasis solely on exercise and fitness.
Another advantage of joining the gym is the access to equipment. To finance a gym at home can be very expensive, even a weights bench and a treadmill can cost a few hundred pounds. For a monthly fee you have access to equipment such as treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, swimming pools and strength training machines. This can not only save you money and give you immediate access but it also keeps workouts interesting and varied. Other perks of a gym membership can include saunas and jacuzzis, and some gyms even offer belly dancing, hula-hooping and jump rope circuit.
Combatting stress can also be a great reason to go to the gym. Admittedly the effort required to get yourself together to attend the gym can be a stressful process. Preparing your gym clothes, travelling to the gym, being overweight and/or self critical can all induce aspects of stress and embarrassment. However, the ability to overcome these obstacles can be very rewarding and can help people become more confident as well as healthier. For some, the gym can be a getaway from the stresses of life, a time to forget everything else that is going on and focus on themselves.
Of course, the gym is not for everyone. The idea of suiting up and lifting weights can seem a waste of time and energy. Those who have other interests would rather spend their time working on alternate hobbies and skills. Money can very often be an issue for many. Although people can shop around to find a gym that fits in with their financial circumstances, they would prefer to save on the cost of a gym membership and utilise free, public facilities or work out in the comfort of their own home. Working out at home means that you are free to utilise the space as you wish, not have to wait to use equipment and fit in your exercise time with your own schedule, not the opening times of the gym.
The hustle and bustle of the gym environment can be quite intimidating. Some may find it too loud, too competitive and too stressful. It can certainly be true that a gym can attract people who take the competitive element a little too serious and their overzealousness can have a detrimental effect on others
A more profound reason for people to avoid the gym is germ phobia. For those who wish to keep fit but shiver at the idea of germs, the gym can be a breeding pit. Utilising equipment after another user would be an absolute impossibility and so are avoided.
